The winner receives honor, gifts, and enough food and supplies to never worry for anything material again. The Games, while entertainment for the Capitol's citizens, are a yearly reminder to the 12 districts of their unsuccessful rebellion 75 years ago, during which District 13 was completely destroyed.

In District 12, sixteen year-old Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) cares for her mother and her sister Primrose "Prim" (Willow Shields) since her father died in a mine accident when she was 11. Each year, since the age of 12, Katniss has put her name in the lottery, or reaping, more than once. In return for taking this extra annual risk, she receives extra grain and oil for her family. In addition, Katniss has been illegally hunting for food outside the gates of District 12 with her friend Gale (Liam Hemsworth), whose father died in the same mining accident as Katniss' and who similarly cares for his family.

Prim, now age 12, has her name placed in the reaping for the first time — only once — and it is unexpectedly drawn. Katniss watches as Prim is taken away by four peacekeepers, and volunteers to replace her sister in the Games. She competes with other tributes, including trained "Career Tributes" who have been illegally training for the Games their entire lives, as well as Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson), the male tribute from District 12, who has secretly loved Katniss since childhood, and who once did her a kindness she never could forget. Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson), a drunk and the only living victor from District 12, mentors both Katniss and Peeta before and during the Hunger Games.

The film opens in the present day, when the proprietor of a small traveling circus encounters an elderly man who has apparently become detached from his nursing home group, which attended the circus earlier that day. Jacob reveals that he was present during one of the most infamous circus disasters of all time and the circus owner asks him to share his story.

Most of the film then takes place in a flashback to the era of the Great Depression. 23-year-old Polish American Jacob (Robert Pattinson) is a Cornell veterinary medicine student on the brink of a promising career as a veterinarian. Unfortunately, during his very last final exam, he is interrupted and informed that his parents were killed in a car crash. His father (Ilia Volok) has left huge debts, and the bank forecloses on Jacob's home. Feeling there is no point in returning to school, and having no home to go home to, he jumps onto a passing train where he meets Camel (Jim Norton).

In the morning, Jacob discovers that he jumped on the Benzini Brothers Circus train. He sees a beautiful woman, Marlena (Reese Witherspoon) and meets August (Christoph Waltz), the circus owner, head animal trainer, and Marlena's husband. Jacob reveals he studied veterinary science and has noticed a problem with Silver, the star horse in the show. August agrees to hire Jacob as a vet for the circus animals after Jacob tells August that Silver is in terrible pain and will soon be unable to walk, never mind perform.

August instructs Jacob to "fix" Silver and keep him performing as long as possible. But Jacob cannot bear to see Silver's suffering and takes it upon himself to put Silver down. August is furious with Jacob's decision to euthanize Silver against orders. To show Jacob who is boss, he threatens to throw him from the moving train - telling him that an animal's suffering is nothing compared to a man's, and that Jacob must carry out all of August's future orders if he wishes to keep his job.

August eventually procures Rosie the elephant as Silver's replacement. He is initially thrilled and invites Jacob to his car for dinner and cocktails with him and Marlena. Jacob — clearly attracted to Marlena — watches uncomfortably as the married couple flirt and dance in front of him, but later in the evening becomes clear that their relationship is complicated. August is possessive, jealous and sometimes rough with Marlena.

In the next few weeks, August becomes frustrated when Rosie the elephant seems impossible to train. August is brutal with Rosie, beating her when she fails to follow orders. After one such beating, Jacob realizes that the elephant was trained in Polish and only understands Polish commands. After that, Rosie performs beautifully and the circus enjoys a short period of success.

While working closely together to train Rosie, Jacob and Marlena fall in love. After August discovers this, he cruelly taunts both Marlena and Jacob. Later that night, Marlena discovers that August plans to throw Jacob from the train and they run away together. Hiding in a local hotel, they are ambushed by August's henchmen who drag Marlena away and beat up Jacob.

Jacob returns to the circus to find Marlena. Simultaneously, several circus employees finally become fed up with August's murderous cruelty and unleash their revenge by unlocking all the animals' cages while the big top tent is jam-packed with an audience enjoying Marlena and Rosie's performance. Jacob attempts to find Marlena in the chaos and August violently attacks him. When Marlena tries to stop August from beating Jacob, he turns his fury on her and attempts to choke her, while one of August's henchmen continues beating Jacob. Two circus workers save Jacob just in time. Lying on the ground, bloodied and beaten, he looks up and sees Rosie hit August on the back of the head with a metal spike, killing him instantly.

Back in the present, Jacob explains what happened afterward: he returned to Cornell, took his last exam, and finished his degree. He and Marlena took several of the horses and Rosie and got jobs with Ringling Brothers – he as a vet and she continuing to perform with the animals. They married and had five children and kept Rosie until her death many years later. Eventually, he took a job as a vet at the Albany zoo and Marlena died peacefully in her bed at an old age. He convinces the circus owner to whom he is telling his story to hire him in the ticket booth. The circus owner agrees and Jacob states that he has finally come home.

Dr. Evans tells them he has to do a colonoscopy on Mr. Brown, and they find a growth that needs to be removed surgically. Meanwhile Madea (Tyler Perry) drives her car through a restaurant because they stopped serving breakfast.

Shirley's children Byron (Bow Wow), Tammy (Natalie Desselle-Reid), and Kimberly (Shannon Kane) arrive at the dinner. Byron arrives with his girlfriend Renee (Lauren London) and his baby Byron Jr. Tammy arrives with her husband Harold (Rodney Perry) and their two kids, Tammy and Harold fighting about directions. Kimberly arrives with her husband Calvin (Isaiah Mustafa). Tammy and Kimberly start to fight, and Byron's ex-girlfriend Sabrina (Teyana Taylor) arrives. Sabrina is Byron's baby momma, and she likes calling Byron a drug dealer, since he was one when he was young and got arrested because of it, and she loudly extends his name, just to annoy him and his family. Sabrina also happens to be the manager of 'Smax', the restaurant that Madea crashed into. Everybody leaves for their own reasons and Shirley doesn't get the chance to tell them about her cancer. During the night, Byron and Renee sneak inside Shirley's house to sleep there, but Byron gets arrested by the police for bad child support. Shirley goes to Kimberly's house to ask her to bail him out, but Kimberly refuses. Calvin instead helps Shirley bail him out.

Aunt Bam tells Madea about the cancer and the family’s situation and Madea promises to gather all Shirley’s children for dinner that evening. She goes to Harold’s garage where Tammy works and tells her to go to the family dinner. Tammy gets called by a client so Madea slaps and disciplines Tammy’s children for their disrespect, which puts fear into them. She then goes to Byron’s workplace, but she finds him outside, since he was fired for being late as he spent the night in jail. She proceeds to Kimberly, whom she finds her showing clients a house and she yells at her to attend the dinner. Meanwhile, Mr. Brown loses a lot of blood during his surgery and the doctor asks Cora to donate some. When she does, she finds out that she doesn't have the same blood type as him, implying that he may not be her real father.

At dinner, Tammy and Kimberly have a vicious argument that leads to Tammy revealing that Kimberly is Byron’s mother, since she had become pregnant when she 13 years old (she was raped when she was 12 years old by an uncle). Byron storms out of the house, angry this was kept from him. For the first time, Harold put his foot down towards Tammy and tells her to respect him more. Tammy and Harold then sort their problems out because of the way things didn't work out between the two. Harold acted weak because Tammy acted like she was the boss of him, which led their children to show no respect for their parents or anyone else. Over time, Shirley’s condition worsens greatly and she goes to the hospital; she tells Byron, Tammy, Harold, and Calvin, who arrive to see her, that she loves them all, including Kimberly who isn’t present, and she dies. After Shirley's funeral service, Madea confronts the family, saying that Shirley was a peaceful woman and she didn't want all the fighting going on.

First, Madea confronts Sabrina about abusing Byron’s hard-earned money, and that she must start respecting him, especially telling her to stop using their child to make his life look miserable or she will be dealing with Madea or worse. Second, Madea confronts Byron and tells him to get a job in order go on the right path, because selling drugs will lead him to his own demise and Renee will just move on to the next man with a lot of money. Madea also wants Byron to start taking care of his baby and settle things between him and Sabrina together. Third, Madea tells everyone that Shirley didn't want her children to know that Kimberly was raped by their uncle, which is why she became so hostile and aggressive towards everyone, because she didn't forgive the man that raped her. Kimberly sorts her issues with Calvin, feeling that she doesn't know how to begin, and finally hugs him and apologizes. Byron breaks up with Renee, because he just buried his mother while Renee only thinks about herself. He later forgives Kimberly (who would need to apologize to the entire family for all the terrible pain she's caused).

The film ends with Madea, Mr. Brown, and Cora on The Maury Povich Show to find out if Mr. Brown is in fact Cora's father. Madea says he is, but it turns out he's not. This surprises Madea who runs off-stage, sobbing hysterically.

African Cats, referred to as a "true life adventure," tells the true story of two animal families in the wild by using real-life footage. The film focuses on a young lion cub named Mara being raised by her mother, Layla, a mother cheetah named Sita who is raising five newborns, and Fang, the leader of a pride defending his family from a banished lion. With so many species competing for space and food in the savannah, the animals must figure out the best way to survive.

The film begins by introducing Sita, a Cheetah in the Masai Mara, in Africa. She has just given birth to five cubs. Although cheetahs are solitary by nature, Sita now has her cubs to take care of, and teach before they each go their own way. Then we see Mara, a six month-old lion cub with her mother Layla, who both belong to the River pride. The pride's leader is Fang, an older lion who has a distinctive broken tooth thanks to an earlier fight. In the North of the Masai Mara, where Sita is caring for her cubs, another pride of lions is led by Kali, who wants to expand his pride by taking over Fang's southern pride. However, they cannot reach the southern pride as they are divided by a crocodile infested river. Sita's cubs are beginning to run and play when Kali and his four sons are on patrol. Sita, seeing it as a danger to her cubs, goads Kali and his sons so as to get them tired and away from her cubs. However after the confrontation, the cubs have scattered. Sita calls for her cubs throughout the night, and as it gets darker, other predators are seen and heard. In the morning, three of the five cubs have returned to Sita. Although she continues to call to them, it is known that the remaining cubs were taken by the hyenas.

Meanwhile, Layla is injured by the kick of a zebra during a hunt. As the Wildebeest begin to migrate to greener pastures, so does the River pride. However, due to her injury and her older age, Layla has trouble keeping up. Mara stays beside her mother and helps on her way. Soon though they begin to lose track of the pride. Knowing that Mara needs the pride, Layla forces through her injury, and they soon find themselves with the River pride once more.

As time passes, Sita's cubs have grown more, and begin to show more of their cheetah nature. One day, three older Cheetah brothers roaming about zone in on Sita. Again, Sita finds herself having to divert attention so that they do not find her cubs. However, being Cheetahs they do not tire as easily as lions and soon the brothers have separated Sita from her cubs. As they circle the cubs, the cubs stand their ground and hiss at the bullies, but before the older Cheetah brothers can do anything a passing Elephant chases them away.

Some time later, the river that separates the River pride and the northern pride has lessened enough so that Kali and one of his sons can cross. They head towards the River pride and Fang, seeing Kali and his son approach, runs away. Knowing that Mara would be killed by Kali, Layla stands up to Kali and tries to run him off. Seeing what Layla is doing, the rest of the lionesses fight back against Kali and his son, successfully running out Kali. Fang returns to his pride and life begins as usual for the pride.

However, Layla was injured even further during the fight. Seeing that she might not make it, for Mara's sake she goes to her sister Malaika, who has cubs of her own and reconnects with her so as to maintain a spot for Mara on the pride. Once she sees that Mara will be accepted by her sister, Layla slips away from the pride to find a nice quiet place. After she finds it, she is seen lying down, having died.

As more time goes by, Kali returns with his four sons in tow. Although his sons have shown signs of betraying their father with ideas of dethroning him, Kali is still strong and shows them who is boss. As they return to take over, Fang runs away, never to be seen of again.

Kali takes over the pride, and runs off Fang's cubs including Mara. Her male cousins are seen as a threat to Kali, so he and his sons hunt them down. Seeing that they can no longer stay in the south, they cross the river. But the river has grown since Kali crossed, and the crocodiles are a threat. As they near the north, one of the male cubs is nearly caught by the crocodiles. But they both reach land unscathed. The lionesses refuse Kali as their leader, the wound of losing their cubs still fresh in their minds.

Mara, banished by her pride, tries to live on her own. However, she was banished before she was taught to hunt and finds her first attempts at catching meals, even a small Warthog, unsuccessful. She learns that there are benefits belonging to a pride.

Soon the Wildebeest return, and the Lionesses begin to hunt for their new cubs, Kali's offspring. Mara successfully hunts and feasts. Soon after she proves herself to the pride and is welcomed back. Meanwhile, Sita and her cubs, who are now young adults, have been having a tranquil time. Sita begins to prepare her sons by teaching them to hunt. They practice on a Serval and a Jackal. Then they encounter Kali's pride and learn to avoid and outrun lions. Sita, seeing that her sons are ready to forge their own path, leaves them and returns to the solitary life of a Cheetah.

Mara is shown with her pride, old enough now to become a mother herself.

Taggart Transcontinental stock plummets because of its use of Rearden Metal, and Dagny leaves Taggart Transcontinental temporarily and forms her own company to finish the Rio Norte line. She renames it the John Galt Line, after the phrase "Who is John Galt?"—which has become a meme for any question to which it is pointless to seek an answer.

A new law forces Rearden to sell most of his businesses, but he retains Rearden Steel for the sake of his metal and to finish the John Galt Line. The line opens and completes its first run safely. Hank and Dagny celebrate the success of the line at the home of Wyatt, now a close friend. That night, Dagny and Hank make love. She explains that she wants the attention Sidney got, and that the two want to become famous for being the survivors of the murders and framing Trevor for it; she then pulls him out of a closet and executes him with a shot to the head. When Jason leaves and tries to apologize to Sabrina, Chef McKenna is busy kissing Blythe and not noticing the food which begins to burn which sets off the alarm. Sabrina closes the door on him but they make up through text; however, they have doubts about their wedding.

In the morning, everything begins normal. The boys have a friendly game of football though Pam tries to tell Jason of Claudine and Geneva's secret. Blythe also talks to McKenna about the relationship. McKenna tells her that he thinks she is beautiful and a relationship is still an option. While Pam is getting fitted in her dress, she tries to confront Sabrina on the secret but is interrupted when Jason gets hurt when pushed by Malcolm. Pam tells Sabrina to ask her parents who are her real parents. Claudine and Geneva tell the truth which hurts Sabrina and causes her to drive off and cancel the wedding. Jason confronts his mother and tells her he is a grown man and to stop treating him like a little boy. Jason tells everyone to look for Sabrina and also punches Malcolm. Jason prays to God to help him.

Geneva is called by Sabrina who is at the docks in a boat. Geneva gives the story of Sabrina's father. He was a man in Paris whom she loved and planned to travel the world with but she soon found out he had a wife and child and she returned home alone and pregnant. Jason meets back with Sabrina and the two reconcile. Sabrina goes back home to dress. She gets a broom and a note from Pam saying she is returning home and is sorry. She chases down Pam and asks her to stay. They forgive each other and Pam agrees to stay. Jason and Sabrina have the wedding and also jump the broom. After the wedding, Sebastian kisses Shonda, finally winning her affections, and presumably begin a relationship. Greg and Claudine reconcile and she reveals she has a secret fund. At the end, the whole family does the cupid shuffle with everyone happy.

He then sees a Borrower named Arrietty.

That night Arrietty's father Pod takes Arrietty above the floorboards to show her how he gets sugar. Their first stop is the kitchen, then they walk within a wall to reach a dollhouse in Shō's bedroom, to get tissue. Before Arrietty and Pod can leave, Arrietty notices Shō is awake, and accidentally drops the sugar cube they got. Shō tells them not to be afraid of him.

The next day, Shō leaves the dropped sugar cube beside an underground air vent where he first saw Arrietty, but Arrietty's mother Homily warns them not to take it because their existence must be kept secret from humans. Still, Arrietty sneaks out to visit Shō in his bedroom, and the two become friends. On her return, Arrietty is intercepted by her father. Pod and Homily realize they have been discovered, and decide the family must move out of the house.

Shō learns from Sadako that his ancestors have seen Borrowers in this house, and they had the dollhouse made especially for the Borrowers, with working electric lights and ovens. However, the Borrowers had not been seen since, and the dollhouse stayed in Shō's room. Shō uncovers the floorboards above the Borrower household, uproots their kitchen and replaces it with the kitchen from the dollhouse.

Pod returns injured from a borrowing mission, helped by Spiller, a Borrower boy he met on the way. Spiller suggests some places the Borrowers can move to, and, after he recovers, Pod goes to check them out. Arrietty goes to say goodbye to Shō. During their subsequent conversation Shō theorises that the Borrowers are becoming extinct, which hurts Arrietty. Apologising, Sho reveals he has had a heart condition since birth, and will have an operation in a few days. The operation does not have a good chance of success.

Meanwhile Haru, Sadako's maid, notices the floorboards have been disturbed. While Sadako is out, Haru locks Shō in his room, unearths the Borrowers' house and puts Homily in a jar in the kitchen. Haru calls a pest removal company to smoke out the Borrowers and bring them to her alive. When Arrietty returns to find Homily missing and their house disturbed, she goes to Shō for help. Arrietty helps Shō break out of his locked room, Shō then carries Arrietty to the kitchen and distracts Haru while Arrietty rescues Homily. Sadako returns soon after the pest removal company comes, and tells them to leave. Haru tries to prove to Sadako the Borrowers really exist, but Homily has escaped, and there is nothing below the floorboards: The Borrowers have already set off on their move, and Shō has destroyed the remains.

The Borrowers stop for dinner during their move, and Shō's cat spots Arrietty. The cat brings Shō to Arrietty. He gives her a sugar cube as a parting gift, and tells her the Borrowers' fight for survival has given him hope to live through the operation, which will happen in two days' time. In return, Arrietty gives Shō her hairclip. The Borrowers then go into a teapot, which Spiller steers down a river.

The film starts off with both Tuck (Tom Hardy) and FDR (Chris Pine) at a party as undercover CIA agents. Their mission is to take down Heinrich who seems to be part of some illegal dealing. Heinrich enters the party, goes into a room, and shoots some of the room's attendants.

The two CIA agents must stop Heinrich. They fail to kill Heinrich, but they do kill Heinrich's brother. The death of Heinrich's brother ends up front page news. Because of the publicity, the CIA chief grounds the men to "desk work."

Heinrich seeks revenge for his brother's death.

After watching an advertising for the site, Tuck decides to join the online dating site, itsfate.com. Trish (Chelsea Handler) also creates a profile for Lauren without Lauren's approval. When Lauren learns about the profile, she gets upset with Trish, but when she views Tuck's picture on the dating website, she agrees to a date with him. After the date with Tuck, she meets FDR at a movie store. The two do not hit it off: FDR infuriates her. Regardless, FDR is smitten and crashes Lauren's company meeting. He blackmails her into a date. They meet at 8pm at a club the next day, but Lauren soon leaves the club - infuriated.

However, outside the club, Lauren sees her ex-boyfriend and kisses FDR to make her ex jealous. Then Lauren and FDR go to a pizza parlor for dinner.

At work, Tuck and FDR realize that they are dating the same woman. They agree to a Gentlemen's Agreement. Neither are allowed to sleep with her. They also agree not to jeopardize their friendship over Lauren.

Meanwhile, Lauren agonizes over her decision to date two men, but her best friend Trish encourages her to do so.

Tuck and FDR continue dating Lauren. They use CIA surveillance technologies to spy on each other and on Lauren and to hinder each other's pursuit of Lauren. From their surveillance, they learn interesting facts about Lauren. For example, FDR learns that she loves a famous painter. He uses this fact to impress her by showing her some of the painter's paintings and his "knowledge" of the painter's handiwork.

By eavesdropping on Lauren's conversations with her best friend, Trish, the men learn what Lauren truly feels about them - specifically that she finds FDR to have skinny hands and to be into himself too much and Tuck to be "British" and "safe." Both men try to change her opinion of them. FDR brings Lauren to an animal shelter and adopts an abandoned puppy. Tuck invites her paint balling.

Eventually, Lauren decides that the best way to choose between the two men is to have sex with them. She has "amazing" sex with FDR. When Tuck finds out, he admonishes FDR for breaking the "Gentlemen's Agreement." Tuck then pretends to have had sex with Lauren.

Eventually, Lauren calls Tom. FDR takes the call as confirmation that Lauren has chosen Tuck. Tuck and Lauren go to dinner. FDR interrupts the dinner to warn Tuck that Heinrich has been following him. However, Tuck is convinced that FDR is jealous; they fight while Lauren is in the bathroom. Eventually Lauren returns and learns that the two men are friends. She is upset. She calls Trish.

In Trish's car, she explains to her best friend what happened. Heinrich, who has been following Tuck and Lauren, interrupts and takes the two women hostage.

Heinrich uses Lauren's cell phone to call Tuck and asks him to meet him at a location. If he does not come unarmed with FDR, the women will be dead. Tuck and FDR hijack a red car and follow Heinrich. They save the two women.

Heinrich follows Tuck and FDR to an unfinished freeway. Heeding Lauren's advice, as Heinrich approaches Tuck, FDR, and Lauren in his bulletproof car, the two men shoot the car's headlights.

The car explodes and flies towards Lauren. FDR saves her.

Tuck realizes that Lauren loves FDR. The two men make up. Lauren and FDR kiss.

Eventually, Tuck reconciles with his ex-wife.

Lauren and FDR get engaged.

The final scene of the movie has Tuck and FDR in a airplane about to jump out. FDR reveals to Tuck that he once slept with his wife a long time ago before Tuck met her and that they are even because Tuck slept with Lauren. Tuck reveals to FDR that he never slept with Lauren. An American mortician, John Miller (Bale), arrives in Nanjing in order to bury the foreign head priest of a convent for Catholic girls, just after the city was bombed and invaded by the Japanese forces. A short time after his arrival at the convent, a group of flamboyant prostitutes from the local red-light district find their way to the compound looking for shelter, as foreigners and foreign institutions seem to be left alone by the marauding Japanese soldiers. While the prostitutes hide out in the cellar, Miller struggles with and finally gives in to his feelings of responsibility to protect the teenage schoolgirls, and poses as the convent's priest when the compound is repeatedly visited by Japanese soldiers looking for girls to rape. With the help of Chinese collaborator Mr. Meng (Kefan), who is the father of one of the girls, he starts to repair the convent's truck in case there should be an opportunity to bring the girls out of Nanjing.

Japanese Colonel Hasegawa (Atsuro Watabe) finally promises to protect the convent by placing guards in front of the gate, and requests that the girls sing a choral for him. After the performance, he hands Miller an official invitation for the girls to sing at the Japanese army's victory celebration. Fearing for their safety (especially since the guards' main concern seems to be not letting any of the girls leave the compound), Miller declines. Kato informs him that it is not a request, but an order and that the girls are going to be picked up the next day. Before they leave, the Japanese soldiers count the girls and erroneously include one of the prostitutes (who has strayed from the cellar looking for her cat), totalling 13.

Induced by their de-facto leader Yu Mo (Ni), the prostitutes decide to protect the girls by meeting the Japanese on their behalf. As they are only twelve, the former convent priest's adopted son volunteers as well. Miller initially opposes to their self-sacrificing decision, but ultimately assists them in disguising using his skills as a mortician.

The next day, the 13 are led away by the unsuspecting Japanese soldiers. After they have left, Miller hides the convent girls on the truck he repaired. Using a single-person permit Mr. Meng was able to obtain, he drives out of the town. In the last scene, the truck is seen driving on a deserted highway in Western direction, away from the advancing Japanese army, towards safety.

Kominsky repairs the ball seconds before midnight, and, in gratitude, Claire leaves him in charge of the operation, and rushes to see the ball drop with her father, Stan. Meanwhile, Nurse Aimee has a video conference with her husband (Common), a soldier serving in Afghanistan.

Paul helps Ingrid complete all the items on her list, including a New Year's kiss, and she gives him the tickets. Meanwhile, Randy and Elise bond, and, as they are about to kiss, the elevator is repaired and Elise rushes to Jensen's show. Randy notices she forgot her rubber band and rushes to give it to her. At the Ball, Jensen leaves midway during the show and apologizes to Laura, who accepts him back and leaves with the approval of her assistant, Sous Chef Ava (Sofia Vergara). With Jensen gone, Elise is called to replace him and attracts the attention of the crowd. She kisses Randy, and they start a romantic relationship.

Griffin and Tess have their baby and, although it is born first, they allow James and Grace to have the bonus after discovering they actually have three children. Meanwhile, after being forbidden from attending the celebration, Hailey runs away to Times Square, where she sees Seth being kissed by another girl. Heartbroken, she meets and is comforted by her mother. Seth finds them and pulls Hailey aside to talk, he apologizes, claiming the girl stole a kiss from him. Percy Alleline becomes the new Chief of the Circus, with Bill Haydon as his deputy and Roy Bland and Toby Esterhase as close allies. They have established their status by delivering apparently high-grade Soviet intelligence material, code named "Witchcraft", about which both Control and Smiley were suspicious. Alleline shares Witchcraft material with the Americans, obtaining valuable US intelligence in exchange.

Smiley is brought out of retirement by Oliver Lacon, the Civil Servant in charge of intelligence, to investigate an allegation by agent Ricki Tarr that there is a long-term mole in a senior role in British Intelligence. Smiley interviews people who left the Circus at the same time as he and Control. One is Connie Sachs, who had been sacked by Alleline for accusing Alexei Polyakov, a Soviet cultural attaché in London, of being a Soviet agent. Another is Jerry Westerby, who had been duty clerk on the night Prideaux was shot. Westerby reveals he had rung Smiley's house for instructions, but Smiley was away. Shortly afterwards, Haydon had arrived at the Circus saying he saw the news on the tickertape at his club at 1am. Smiley realises that because the tape would have been closed by 1am, Haydon must have heard the news from Smiley's wife, with whom Haydon was having an affair.

Smiley finds Tarr hiding at his home. Tarr tells him that he had been sent to Istanbul to investigate Boris, a Soviet agent. There Tarr had an affair with Boris' wife Irina, herself a Soviet operative. She had told him of the existence of the mole run by Soviet spymaster Karla. Tarr had informed London of this revelation and was ordered home at once. Boris and the British station chief in Istanbul were both killed by the Russians and Irina was taken back to Russia. Tarr, accused by the British of defecting and murdering the British station chief, had gone on the run. Smiley instructs Peter Guillam, an intelligence officer who is secretly aiding the investigation, to steal the Circus logbook for the night Tarr called: the relevant pages had been removed, evidence that Tarr's story about the mole is true.

Smiley visits Jim Prideaux, who had been repatriated. Prideaux reveals the true purpose of his mission to Hungary: to learn the name of the mole. Control had codenamed the suspects "Tinker" (Alleline), "Tailor" (Haydon), "Soldier" (Bland), "Poorman" (Esterhase) and "Beggarman" (Smiley himself). Prideaux tells of his brutal interrogation and of seeing the Soviets murder Irina in front of him, further evidence that Tarr's story is true.

Smiley learns that Alleline, Haydon, Bland and Esterhase have been meeting Polyakov at a safe house, giving him what they believe to be worthless British information (thinking that, in the eyes of his Russian superiors, he is a loyal KGB agent, and needs something to show them) in return for Witchcraft material. In reality, the mole has been leaking genuine British information to Polyakov while the Witchcraft material was mostly "chicken feed", designed to persuade the Americans to share intelligence with the British, which the mole could then pass to the Soviets.

Smiley obtains the safe house address from Esterhase and has Tarr reappear at the Paris office, knowing that the mole will then want to meet Polyakov to discuss the matter. Smiley waits at the safe house and captures the mole: Haydon. At Sarratt, the Circus interrogation centre, Haydon reveals that he seduced Smiley's wife on Karla's instruction, in order to distort any suspicions Smiley may have had of Haydon. Before his mission to Hungary, Prideaux had visited Haydon and tipped him off about Control's suspicions, thus inadvertently sealing his own fate. The Circus plans to exchange Haydon back to the Soviets, but Prideaux, embittered by his experience, goes to Haydon and shoots him dead. Smiley is restored to the Circus as its chief.

Tintin takes the ship home, but it is broken during a fight between Snowy and a neighbour's cat. As it breaks, a parchment scroll slips out of the ship's mast. Later, Tintin is shot at, then abducted by accomplices of Sakharine, and imprisoned on the SS Karaboudjan. On board, Tintin escapes and meets the ship's nominal captain, Haddock. Haddock has been supplied with whisky by first mate Allan, who is working for Sakharine, and the captain is permanently drunk, and doesn't know what's happening on board his ship. Tintin and Haddock (and Snowy) eventually escape from the Karaboudjan in a lifeboat. Sakharine sends a seaplane to find them, but Tintin is able to capture the plane, and fly towards the (fictitious) Moroccan port of Bagghar, but they crash in the desert.

Dehydrated in the heat, and suffering from a sudden lack of alcohol, Haddock hallucinates, and starts to remember stories about his ancestor, Sir Francis Haddock, who was captain of the Unicorn during the 17th century. Sir Francis' treasure-laden ship was attacked by a pirate ship, led by the masked Red Rackham, and, after a fierce battle and eventual surrender, Sir Francis chose to sink the Unicorn, and most of the treasure, rather than allow it to fall into Rackham's hands. It transpires that there were three models of the Unicorn, each containing a scroll. Together, the scrolls will reveal the location of the sunken Unicorn, and its treasure.

In Bagghar, Tintin and the Captain find out that the third model ship is in the possession of the wealthy Omar Ben Salaad, but it is encased in a bullet-proof glass display case. Sakharine's plan is to stage a concert involving famous diva Bianca Castafiore, the "Milanese nightingale", whose penetrating singing voice will be able to shatter the glass case, allowing Sakharine's trained hawk to fly down and steal the third scroll. After a chase down to the harbour, pursued by Tintin and Haddock, Sakharine finally escapes with all three scrolls. Tintin chases him back to Europe and arranges a police reception for him on the dockside. Haddock and Sakharine, who is revealed to be the descendant of Red Rackham, replay their ancestors' swashbuckling sword fight, using dockside cranes, swords, and even bottles of whiskey. Haddock is eventually victorious and Sakharine is promptly arrested by Thomson and Thompson.

With the three scrolls in their possession, Tintin and Haddock find that the indicated location is Marlinspike Hall, and that the hall had been built originally by Sir Francis Haddock. There, in the cellar, they find some of the treasure, and a clue to the location of the sunken Unicorn. Both men agree to continue the adventure.

Prior to the grand opening, the facility passes a very stringent inspection and Dylan, following his father's advice, reconciles with Lily and confesses his love for her.

Although the town experiences the worst rainstorm in a hundred years that threatens to wash out the opening, the weather clears just in time. They are disappointed when no visitors arrive that morning, until they learn that a fallen tree has blocked the access road, leaving many visitors unsure if the zoo is even open. Eventually, the zoo is well received by the community. While searching for more tickets, Kelly admits to Benjamin that she has a crush on him but " can't get a handle on it". She then kisses him and tells him that maybe they can do that again in New Years. After Benjamin tells her that he's looking foward to New Years, she returns to the zoo.

She gives Albert his father's regimental pennant, telling Albert that his father was not proud about what he did during the war, and that he had thrown the flag and medals away, though Rose saved and kept them hidden. Albert trains Joey for the plough and, to his neighbours' astonishment, prepares a stony hillside field to plant with turnips. But a rainstorm destroys the turnip field and, to pay the overdue rent (and without telling Albert), Ted sells Joey to Captain Nicholls as World War I breaks out. When Albert finds out, Nicholls promises him he will take care of Joey and hopefully return him after the war. Albert tries to enlist in the army, but is too young. Before the captain leaves with Joey, Albert ties his father's pennant to Joey's bridle.

Joey is trained for military operations and deployed to France with Captain Nicholls. In France, Captain Nicholls is killed in a cavalry charge, and the Germans capture the horses. Joey becomes attached to Topthorn, a larger black horse he had military training with. The two horses are used to pull an ambulance wagon driven by two German soldiers, Gunther, and his 14-year-old brother, Michael. Gunther gives the pennant to Michael when he is assigned to the German front, but then steals the horses so he and his brother can ride them back to Germany. One night, German soldiers discover theabsent without leave brothers hiding in a windmill and execute them by firing squad for desertion.

A young French girl named Emilie finds the two horses inside the windmill. Emilie, who suffers from an unspecified illness, lives with her grandfather, who owns the property. Later, German soldiers arrive and confiscate all food and supplies from the property. Emilie's grandfather allows her to ride Joey on her birthday, but when the German soldiers return, they take the horses, though the grandfather keeps the pennant.

The story shifts to Albert, who has now enlisted and is fighting alongside Andrew in the Second Battle of the Somme in 1918, under the command of Lyons's son, David. After a British charge into no-man's land, Albert, Andrew, and other British soldiers miraculously make it across into a deserted German trench, where gas bombs explode, filling the trench with white fumes.

Joey and Topthorn are now being used to pull German heavy artillery, causing Topthorn to die from exhaustion. Joey escapes and runs into no-man's land where he gets entangled in barbed wire. Both British and German soldiers spot Joey and try to coax him to their respective sides. A British Geordie soldier named Colin, waving a white flag, arrives at Joey's side. A German soldier named Peter from Düsseldorf also comes over with wire cutters, and together they free Joey from the barbed wire. They flip a coin to decide where Joey goes; Colin wins and takes Joey back to the British camp.

Andrew died in the gas attack, but Albert survived, though he is temporarily blinded, with bandages covering his eyes. He is recuperating at a British medical camp when the Geordie soldier brings Joey into the medical camp looking for a veterinary surgeon. Meanwhile, Albert is told about the miracle horse back from no-man's land. The army doctor instructs Sgt. Fry to put Joey down due to his injuries, but when Fry is about to shoot, a soft whistle catches Joey's attention. Albert is led through the crowd to Joey, again whistling, while Joey comes over to Albert.

Albert says that he raised Joey, and gives the exact description of his horse markings, confirming his claim. The war ends and Albert's eyesight is restored, but only officers' horses will be shipped home. Joey and the others are to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. The soldiers gather funds to buy Joey for Albert, but during a bidding war with a French butcher reaching 30 pounds, an older gentleman suddenly arrives and bids 100 pounds, winning Joey. The man is Emilie's grandfather. It is implied that Emilie has died, and after hearing about the miracle horse, her grandfather walked three days to get Joey back for the sake of Emilie's memory.

Albert pleads with Emilie's grandfather for the horse to no avail, but before leaving, the grandfather pulls out the pennant and asks if it means anything to Albert. On being told it belonged to Albert's father, the grandfather has a change of heart, and gives Albert the flag and Joey, saying it is what Emilie would have wanted. In the end, Albert rides Joey back to his family's farm and returns the pennant to his father.

He reveals that someone he believes to be the killer has been sending him pressed flowers, which Harriet had always given him on his birthday. He says he will pay Blomkvist handsomely for this job, but Blomkvist agrees only when he promises to give him damning information about Wennerström, who got his start at Henrik's Vanger Industries.

Meanwhile, Salander, who is a ward of the state despite being in her twenties, due to diagnosed mental incompetency, goes to visit her legal guardian, Holger Palmgren, only to discover that he has suffered a stroke. Her new guardian, lawyer Nils Bjurman (Yorick van Wageningen), seizes control of Salander's finances and issues her a monthly allowance, which angers Salander, as Palmgren allowed her to manage her own finances.

Blomkvist gets to work right away, staying in a cottage that Henrik provides. He draws up a family tree of all of the living members of the Vanger family. He receives a visit from Harriet's cousin Cecila Vanger (Geraldine James), who tells him that her sister, Anita, was much closer to Harriet than the rest of them. Blomkvist visits Anita (Joely Richardson), who is living in London, and tells Blomkvist that she can't help him either: she escaped the family when she was eighteen, but Harriet never made it to eighteen. Blomkvist finds Harriet's notebook, containing the names of five women with a 5-digit number next to each of their names. Gustav Morell (Donald Sumpter), a retired policeman, says that they are telephone numbers that are unrelated to the names listed next to them. However, when Blomkvist gets a surprise visit from his daughter Pernilla, she hints that the numbers relate to Bible verses. Blomkvist returns to the cottage to find that each Bible verse comes from the book of Leviticus and describes methods of killing, opening up the first lead on the case in 35 years. Blomkvist's co-worker and lover Erika Berger (Robin Wright) visits him and tells him that because of the financial straits Millennium is in, they will be out of business within a few months. Henrik and his nephew, current Vanger Industries CEO Martin Vanger (Stellan Skarsgård), decide to invest in the magazine. Shortly afterwards, Henrik suffers a heart attack, and the Vanger family asks Blomkvist to stop investigating their family affairs.

Meanwhile, Salander is mugged in a subway station and her laptop is damaged when she fights back. Salander asks Bjurman for some extra money for a replacement computer. Bjurman agrees on condition that she performs fellatio on him. A few nights later, Salander claims to need more money for groceries, and is told to meet Bjurman at his apartment. Bjurman handcuffs Salander to the bed, then rapes and sodomizes her. Without Bjurman's knowledge, Salander has recorded the rape on a hidden camera. A few nights later, she arranges to meet him again at home and renders him unconscious with a taser. Upon waking up, Bjurman finds himself tied and bolted to the floor, naked. Salander then tortures him and shows him the video of her rape. She blackmails him, demanding that he allow her to have full access to her finances again, write glowing monthly reports about her behavior, and apply to have her status of legal incompetency rescinded, or she will post the rape video on the Internet. In addition, Salander tells Bjurman that if she should find out a woman is ever in his apartment again, she will kill him. To make sure he remembers the deal, she tattoos the words, "I AM A RAPIST PIG" on his torso.

Blomkvist begins looking for a researcher to help him find out more about the Bible verses. Frode recommends Salander, whom Blomkvist learns did the background check on him. Upon seeing the incredibly detailed report, he discovers Salander hacked into his computer. He then visits her apartment, making her an offer to help him find Harriet's murderer, to which she agrees. As Salander traces the Bible verses to a series of murders occurring from the late 1940s to the mid 1960s, Blomkvist finds a series of photos of a parade held in Hedestad which Harriet attended on the day that she disappeared. The photos suggest that she saw something that frightened her. He spots a couple in the crowd taking pictures around the same time and tracks down the woman who took the pictures; after locating and reviewing the photos, they find a picture of a man in a blue school uniform staring at Harriet. Salander's research reveals that all of the women murdered had Jewish, or more specifically, Biblical names; linking the murders to several members of the Vanger family who were members of the Swedish Nazi Party. During the investigation, Salander and Blomkvist become lovers.

The next night, Salander looks through family archives examining Harriet and Martin's late father and Henrik's nephew, Gottfried, particularly his travels from the 1940s through the 1960s to see if he was in the same towns as the women at the same time they were murdered. Meanwhile, Blomkvist meets Harald, Henrik's other brother and a former Nazi, and asks to see some pictures he took on the day Harriet disappeared. Blomkvist asks Harald to identify a man in one of the pictures who has a similar jacket and face to the man in the parade photo. Harald immediately identifies him as Martin. Salander continues researching and finds that Gottfried visited every town that each woman was murdered in at the same time they were murdered, but is puzzled that one murder took place two years after Gottfried died. However, she sees that Martin was studying in Uppsala, where the murder was committed, at the time. She deduces that Gottfried "initiated" Martin into being a serial killer when she finds a picture with the two of them attending a conference in one of the towns where a murder was committed, and Martin's picture matches the one on the parade photo.

Blomkvist attempts to break into Martin's house for more clues, but is caught by Martin, who leads Blomkvist into his basement at gunpoint and gasses him. Blomkvist wakes up to find himself hung by his neck. Martin brags about killing dozens of women over several years, but angrily denies killing his sister. Martin then tries to suffocate Blomkvist, but Salander, having missed Blomkvist and gone looking for him, sneaks up behind Martin and strikes him with a golf club. After freeing Blomkvist, she gives chase to Martin on her motorcycle. Martin crashes his car, which ends up on its side as gasoline leaks from the ruptured tank. Martin dies in the explosion as the gasoline ignites on the hot engine.

With the help of two hacker friends, Plague and Trinity, Blomkvist and Salander discover that Harriet (Joely Richardson) has been living in London under Anita Vanger's identity to hide from Martin. Anita helped her escape the island in her car and the two used Anita's maiden name and her married name until Anita and her husband died, leaving her identity all to Harriet. Blomkvist finds Harriet and she tells him that she killed her father, who had been sexually abusing her for years, and that Martin saw her do it. Martin then began repeatedly raping her until Henrik sent him to a boarding school in Uppsala. When he returned on the day of the parade, she fled Sweden with the help of Anita. The framed flowers sent to Henrik on his birthday were sent by Harriet, who intended them as a sign of her well-being. Finally free of her brother, Harriet returns to Sweden and has a tearful reunion with Henrik. As promised, Henrik gives Blomkvist the information on Wennerström, but Blomkvist is dismayed to find out that the information is too old to legally incriminate him, as the statute of limitations has expired, and not shocking enough to turn the public against him. Salander hacks into Wennerström's computer and finds information regarding his involvement with illegal arms and drug trafficking, which she gives to Blomkvist to publish.

The article propels Millennium into stardom and destroys Wennerström. Salander uses her hacking skills to access Wennerström's numerous bank accounts and then travels around Europe in disguise as Irene Nesser, who she presents as Wennerström's assistant. As Nesser, Salander converts all of Wennerström's money into bonds which she converts back into money, then places it into five accounts of her own. From this she ends up with two billion euros. Wennerström is eventually tracked down in Spain and is subsequently murdered by his shady associates. Upon returning to Stockholm, Salander visits her old legal guardian, Palmgren, telling him she found "a friend" he would approve of. She buys Blomkvist a Christmas present of a nice leather coat but on her way to give it to him she spots Blomkvist and Berger walking together happily. Adler meets with Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris) to explain the events, but Moriarty poisons her—deeming her position compromised by her love for Holmes.

Holmes defeats an assassin sent to kill Simza, but she flees before Holmes can interrogate her. After Mary (Kelly Reilly) and Watson's wedding, Holmes meets Moriarty for the first time. Moriarty informs Holmes that he murdered Adler and will kill Watson and Mary if Holmes' interference continues.

Moriarty's men attack Watson and Mary on a train to their honeymoon. Holmes, having followed the pair for protection, throws Mary from the train into a river below where she is picked up by Holmes' waiting brother Mycroft (Stephen Fry). After defeating Moriarty's men, Holmes and Watson travel to Paris to locate Simza. When she is found, Holmes tells Simza that she has been targeted because Rene is working for Moriarty, and may have told her about his plans. Simza takes the pair to the headquarters of an anarchist group to which she and Rene had formerly belonged. They learn that the anarchists have been forced to plant bombs for Moriarty.

The trio follows Holmes's deduction that the bomb is in the Paris Opera. However, Holmes realizes too late that he has been tricked and that the bomb is in a nearby hotel; the bomb kills a number of assembled businessmen. Holmes discovers that the bomb was a cover for the assassination of Meinhart—one of the attendees—by Moriarty's aide, Sebastian Moran (Paul Anderson). Meinhart's death grants Moriarty ownership of Meinhart's weapons factory in Germany. Holmes, Watson, and Simza travel there, following clues in Rene's letters.

At the factory, Moriarty captures and tortures Holmes, while Watson is under sniper fire from Moran. Moriarty reveals that he owns shares in multiple war-profiting companies, and intends to instigate a world war to make himself a fortune. Meanwhile, Watson uses the cannon he had been hiding behind to destroy the lighthouse in which Moran is concealed. The structure collapses into the warehouse where Moriarty is holding Holmes captive. Watson, Simza, and an injured Holmes reunite and escape aboard a moving train. Holmes deduces that Moriarty's final target will be a peace summit in Switzerland, creating an international incident.

At the summit, Holmes reveals that Rene is the assassin and that he is disguised as one of the ambassadors—having been given radical reconstructive surgery by Hoffmanstahl to alter his appearance. Holmes and Moriarty, who is also in attendance, retreat outside to discuss their competing plans. Watson and Simza find Rene and stop his assassination attempt, but Rene is himself silenced by Moran. Outside, Holmes reveals that he previously replaced Moriarty's personal diary that contained all his plans and financing with a duplicate. The original was sent to Mary in London who decrypted the code and cypher using the the information on the board and a book that Holmes had noticed in Moriarty's office during their first meeting. Mary passes the information to Inspector Lestrade (Eddie Marsan) who seizes the bulk of Moriarty's assets, financially crippling him. Holmes and Moriarty anticipate an impending physical confrontation, and both realize Moriarty would win due to Holmes' injured shoulder. Holmes instead grapples Moriarty and forces them both over the balcony and into the Reichenbach waterfall below.

Their bodies are not found. Following Holmes' funeral, Watson and Mary prepare to have their belated honeymoon when Watson, who is now writing the last few lines from "The Final Problem", receives a package containing a breathing device of Mycroft's that Holmes had noticed before the summit. Realizing that Holmes is still alive, Watson leaves his office to find the delivery man. Holmes, having concealed himself in Watson's office, reads a fresh eulogy on Watson's typewriter and adds a question mark after the words "The End".

Before Hunt can escape, the IMF's secretary is killed by Russian security forces led by Sidirov, leaving Hunt and intelligence analyst William Brandt to find their own way out. The team identifies Cobalt as Kurt Hendricks, a Swedish-born Russian nuclear strategist who believes the weak must die for the strong to survive, so he plans to start a nuclear war to initiate the next stage of human evolution. Hendricks bombed the Kremlin in order to acquire a Russian nuclear launch-control device; however, he now needs the activation codes from the Budapest courier in order to launch a nuclear missile at America.

The exchange between Moreau and Hendricks's right-hand man, Wistrom, is due to take place at the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. There, Hunt's team-members separately convince Moreau and Wistrom that they have made the exchange with one another. However, Moreau identifies Brandt as an agent. While Hunt chases Wistrom—only to realize that Wistrom is actually Hendricks in disguise, escaping with the codes—Carter detains Moreau. Moreau attempts to kill the inexperienced Dunn, and Carter throws her out a window to her death. Brandt accuses Carter of compromising the mission for revenge against Moreau, but Hunt accuses Brandt of keeping secrets from them, as he has displayed fighting skills atypical of an analyst. While Hunt seeks more information from Bogdan, Brandt admits he was assigned as security detail to Hunt and his wife Julia in Croatia. While Brandt was on patrol, Julia was killed by a Serbian hit squad, prompting Ethan to pursue and kill them before he was caught by the Russians and sent to prison.

Bogdan and his arms-dealer cousin inform Hunt that Hendricks will be in Mumbai. Hendricks facilitated the sale of a defunct Soviet military satellite to Indian telecommunications entrepreneur Brij Nath. The satellite could be used to transmit the order to fire a missile. While Brandt and Dunn infiltrate the server room to deactivate the satellite, Carter gets Nath to reveal the satellite override code. But Hendricks has anticipated Hunt's plan and turns off Nath's servers before sending a signal from a television broadcasting tower to a Russian nuclear submarine in the Pacific to fire at San Francisco. Hunt pursues Hendricks and the launch device while the other team-members attempt to bring the broadcast station back online. Hunt and Hendricks fight over the launch-control device before Hendricks jumps to his death with it to ensure the launch. Dunn kills Wistrom, allowing Brandt to restore power to the station and enabling Hunt to deactivate the missile. Hunt is then confronted by Sidorov, who sees Hunt has stopped the missile, proving the IMF is innocent in the Kremlin bombing.

The team reconvenes weeks later in Seattle. Hunt introduces the team to longtime colleague Luther Stickell and then issues new assignments. Dunn and Carter accept, but Brandt refuses. Hunt reveals that Julia's death was staged, as he knew he could not protect her, and used her death as a pretext to infiltrate the prison and get close to Bogdan, an IMF source on Hendricks. Relieved of guilt, Brandt accepts his mission while Hunt watches Julia from afar. They share a smile before he embarks on his next mission.

This pattern of suspicion on Eva's part and excuse-making on Franklin's intensifies Eva's fear of her son, as she sees growing evidence of Kevin's pleasure in hurting others. This culminates with his plotting and carrying out the multiple killings of his father, Celia, his teachers, and fellow students, and his imprisonment for the crimes.

The film concludes on the second anniversary of the massacre, when Eva visits Kevin in prison. Kevin is anxious because his 18th birthday and transfer to an adult prison are imminent. Eva asks him why he committed the murders and he responds that he no longer knows why. Eva gives Kevin a hug and says her goodbyes while he is taken away.

Qui-Gon ventures into the settlement of Mos Espa with Jar Jar and the astromech droid R2-D2 to a junk shop to purchase a new hyperdrive generator.
